Question - Is cardiovascular exercise the best exercise to do to burn fat?

Answer - It is a myth that cardiovascular exercise is the best exercise to burn fat! High levels of cardiovascular exercise will reduce the body's muscle mass percentage. Muscle mass is responsible for burning calories as energy is both stored and used there. A high muscle mass percentage is ideal. This is best obtained through performing resistance based exercises. Look at sprinters or any power athletes, they have a high muscle mass and low body fat but will never be caught running a steady mile or more 3 times a week!

You may read about Chunky Aerobics Instructor Syndrome (CAIS). Charles Polquin discovered that the body responds quickly to aerobic exercise (or any given stimulus) but also found that aerobic exercise alone was not able to keep fat off. Apply cardiovascular exercise in the right amount at the correct intensity and with change frequently applied, you will have a winning formula.

If you have any questions you would like to ask our experts, email us and we will post your question and our expert's answer here. The questions and answers will change every month.
