Eye allergies

Eye allergies (conjunctivitis) can be extremely painful and difficult to control. Eye allergies are often referred to as 'Pink Eye' and there are 3 main types and causes:-

  • Allergic conjunctivitis is due to airborne pollen (often associated with hay fever) or dust (allergic rhinitis) or something put into the eye, such as contact lens solutions. Sadly if you suffer with eczema and/or asthma, you are more likely to suffer with this type of allergy too.

  • Infectious conjunctivitis is probably the most common and is caused by a bacterial or viral infection

  • Chemical conjunctivitis is due to chemicals from sprays, perfumes, deodorants and household cleaners etc that can irritate the eye

The symptoms you may experience can range from runny and watery eyes, to blood-shot eyes, itching, soreness and yellow discharge.

There are a range of eye drops available both over the counter or on prescription that can help to alleviate the symptoms of eye allergies and also antibiotics or antihistamines. But it is advisable to talk to your doctor who should be able to help you choose the best treatment.
